David Jr. Re-starts His Training

Does anyone still read or use this blog? If so, I would like to say the following:

So I have been sick off and on for the last 8 weeks. I have had a head cold that has turned into a chest cold three times, and a sore throat once. I am still working off a little cough that won't go away. I hate to work out when I am sick, plus I get tired too easily with a chest cold. I could still diet, but that sucks when you're sick too. Anyway, I am not back to full health, but I am tired of waiting, so tomorrow I am back on the wagon.

DaNae wants me to run the St. George Marathon with her and Dori, maybe Di. I think that I will give it a shot. I need to train for something anyway, right? Well, goodluck to me!!!

Thompson Goals

I am finally posting goals like everything in my life lately it is a matter of getting around to it.

GOALS: Gordon would like to lose 20 pounds by lifting weights on his machine he had to have and after May (when he graduates) I asked very nicely for him to do cardio with me.

Dianna: 1) Cook healhier meals for the family, Gordon wants me to cook period. I have transitioned over to light yogurt and whole wheat pasta. Kids didn't notice any difference.
2) Train for 1/2 marathon DaNae wants me to run with her on April 19th.
3) Lose 5 pounds and tone up my post-prego tummy. After the marathon I'm going to have Gordon and I do Denise Austin's tone your tummy program. It is a 4 week exercise and diet program.

Results: I started a women on weights class in January and when I started my body fat was 25.2%. The desired range is 18-25%. I had lean body mass of 74.8%. I had 3 pd of muscle per 1 pd of fat. Feb: Body fat 21.8% LBM 78.2% 3.6 pd muscle per 1 pd fat. and I lost 5 pounds
I weigh in next week for the final time.

Six Tips on How to Stick with your New Year's Resolutions

1. Focus on positive self-talk. Congratulate yourself every time you take a step towards your resolution goal. Be your own best cheerleader.
2. Avoid berating yourself if you should fall back or break a resolution. Just brush yourself off and start over again.
3. Stick to your resolution by considering it a promise to yourself, not a test of your willpower.
4. Avoid situations that put you in temptation's path, meaning if you're on a diet, don't go to the ice cream parlor.
5. Keep a sticky note in a prominent place so that you see it every day, reminding yourself of your resolutions. (i.e., on your bathroom mirror, next to your bed, on the visor of your car, on the refrigerator)
6. Be realistic. Make sure your plan is a realistic one that can fit into your lifestyle. Will you really have the energy to go out for that evening exercise class? Make changes as easy and convenient as possible.

Fitness Tip

All the nutrition and fitness experts recommend getting up and moving to shed the pounds. This is because exercise has other weight loss benefits than just keeping fit. Exercise before eating! Even a ten minute walk can decrease your appetite and prevent you from over eating.

Goal Check Up

Since it is the beginning of February, I want to know how everyone did on their personal goals. Have you been exercising as much as you said, eating better, lost any weight, gained muscle, etc. Let's just see how everyone is progressing. So post about how you are coming on your goals, or if you have met your goals and need to revamp them.

Hope you are all keeping up the hard work. I have been hearing rumors about some bomb family trips for all who are actively participating.

Feel your FULLness

Lately, I have been reading a book titled "Intuitive Eating." It is such a good book and teaches so many awesome principles to remember in the weight loss/healthy living process. The principle of the day is knowing when you are full or hungry.

"Listen for the body signals that tell you you are no longer hungry. Observe the signs that show your're comfortably full. Pause in the middle of eating and ask yourself how the food tastes, and what your current fullness level is."

I have been trying to do this for the last few days and it really does make a difference. A lot of times, I find myself eating not because I am hungry, but just bored or need something to chew on. Gum is super good for times like these. It also helps to enjoy a meal when you evaluate your hunger and how the food tastes. I have learned if the food isn't as good as I want, I just throw it away or give it to Ben, because it AIN'T WORTH THE CALORIES!
So try and be conscious about eating. Don't ever let yourself get too hungry or too full. You always want to be SATISFIED.

I would love to hear any other tips that you are finding helpful. But seriously this book rocks! Everyone should read it NOW!!

Make it Rain...

Dori had a good idea that involved doing 3 big goals for the year and doing smaller monthly goals. For example, big goal lose 10% body weight but smaller goal drink 8 oz. water. I like that idea and it feels like you are achieving small victories along the way. Biggest Lose couples is on Tuesday nights at 8/7 central on nbc. It really is a motivating show and will make you want to go to the gym and get your sweat on!!

My goals:

1.) Lose 10 pounds May
2.) Exercise 5 times/week (cardio + weight training)
3.) Train for 1/2 marathon (April 19 in SLC for all who want to join me)

Monthly Goal:

1.) Drink 8 oz water a day
2.) Cook healthy meals for family

Karolyn's Spinach Smoothie

I started a recipe section, so if you have any healthy eats, post it and at the bottom of the page label it recipes so it will all be sorted. Kar contributed our first one.

Ok, my friends swear by this and have to have it every morning. . .Derek it goes great with those frozen bags of fruit from costco.
1/2 c. juice (any kind- I usually use apple juice or OJ)
1/2 c. water
1 banana
2 handful of frozen fruit (you name it- berries, mixed, mango)
Spinach- the more the better ( I buy the big plastic container from Sams or Costco and go through about 2 a week)Put all in a blender and blend. You probably will have to stop it and use a spoon to to stir it a bit.*if you use fresh fruit, put a few ice cubes in it to make it colder. The beauty of this drink is you can use your imagination and put whatever you want in it, but REMEMBER your SPINACH!!

I Plan to be Ripped

My goals are the same as Dad's. The Book of Mormon is going to be tough though. I am reading it in Spanish and it is taking me a lot longer and I am getting a lot less out of it, but I will try. So I am copying Dad's goals. And yes, if I am so blessed as to the winning of the gold thong (provided by Brent) I will wear it proudly at the winner circle celebration trip (provided be the parentals).

Love,

David Jr.

A New Year, A New You

I know this may seem a little like a weight watchers commercial, but let's take a shot.

This year is going to be a big year for our family. We are going to make the necessary changes so that we can live healthy and be our best selves. So, I have come up with a plan to help all of us be motivated to start looking and feeling our best. It is a variation of "The Biggest Loser" for all who have seen the hit show on nbc. However, I dont want the focus to be the number on the scale as it is a lifestyle change. I dont want this to be something that lasts for a couple months or even a year, I want it to really be a change. Here are the basics...I am still working out the kinks and I am open to suggestion.

As a member of the biggest loser Davenport Edition:
  • Set goals to reach optimal fitness and health level

  • Commit to exercise at least 3 times a week

  • Healthier eating-not eliminating food, but eating in moderation

  • Support members and help meet their goals

  • Report monthly to the blog or email about progress
Everyone is able to participate. It doesn't matter if you are pregnant, nursing, or already at your goal weight...there is always room for improvement and we can all be healthier.

To Begin:

1. Write down 3 goals you would like to achieve. It should be measurable, realistic, and given a time frame in which it will be completed.
2. Share these goals via the blog or the email I set up. It is important to have accountability or this process won't work.
3. Report progress each month

Helpful tips:
  • Some members have found great success at weight watchers. It is so worth the money and truly a plan you can maintain.

  • You dont have to join a gym to exercise. Just MOVE more. Take walks, park further away from the grocery store, play outside with kids, etc.

  • I will periodically be posting motivational things so check back

  • The email address is davenportbiggestloser@gmail.com

  • The blog site is davenportbiggestloser@blogspot.com password davenport8-so everyone can access it and post helpful tip, advice, or struggles they may be having

THE REWARD
If we are all successful with our goals, the Parentals will sponsor a family trip.

I hope everyone takes this seriously and makes 2008 a year of getting fit and being confident with ourselves and our bodies.
